Buddelia Butterfly Bush

Buddleja, or Buddleia /ˈbʌdliːə/ (also historically given as Buddlea) commonly known as the butterfly bush[4] is a genus comprising over 100 species of flowering plants endemic to Asia, Africa, and the Americas.  The genus Buddleja is now included in the Scrophulariaceae family; it had earlier been classified in either the Loganiaceae or in a family of its own, the Buddlejaceae.  Of the approximately 100 species nearly all are shrubs <5 m (16 ft) tall, but a few qualify as trees, the largest reaching 30 m (98 ft).

The colour of the flowers varies widely, from mostly pastel pinks and blues in Asia, to vibrant yellows and reds in the New World, while many cultivars have deeper tones.   The flowers are generally rich in nectar and often strongly honey - scented. The fruit is a small capsule about 1 cm (0.39 in) long and 1–2 mm (0.039–0.079 in) diameter, containing numerous small seeds; in a few species (previously classified in the separate genus Nicodemia) the capsule is soft and fleshy, forming a berry.

Hardiness Zones are 5 to 10.  Prune the Buddleia down to around 30cm (12 in) from ground level at this time. There may already be sprouting shoots on the Buddleia in a mild spring. No matter - Prune it back hard. This will make the Butterfly Bush grow many new arching branches, that will have larger flowers than if it had not been pruned.

Buddleia can be propagated under intermitten mist and root very fast.

you may buy a butterfly bush for $5.97 in a 4 1/2" pot.
